Buying a Used Car? A Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
What a proper pre-purchase inspection covers, and the warning signs to watch for before you hand over your money.
A private used car is sold “as-is”, once you’ve paid, any problems are yours. A pre-purchase inspection by a licensed mechanic is cheap insurance against an expensive mistake.
What a good inspection covers
- Engine condition, leaks and service history
- Transmission and driveline operation
- Brakes, steering and suspension wear
- Tyres, including age and uneven wear
- Known faults specific to that make and model
- Signs of previous accident damage or repairs
Red flags to watch for yourself
- A seller who won’t allow an independent inspection
- Fresh oil hiding a leak, or a very recently cleaned engine bay
- Mismatched panel colours or uneven gaps
- A service history with big gaps or none at all
We inspect the car at the seller’s location anywhere in Brisbane or the Gold Coast and give you a straight answer on whether it’s worth the asking price, plus leverage to negotiate on anything we find. And if you buy it, we can do the Safety Certificate on the spot. Call 0467 365 395.
